Holly Hill House...

Background...

I remember, as a young boy, being taken to a cottage, out on Hawnby Moor - this was "Granddad's Cottage".

More recently, the subject of a cottage or farmhouse out on the moor came up in genealogical discussions with several people... this brought back memories.

In August 2002, I went back to Holly Hill Farm, taking Granddad Banks with me - this is where he was born and brought up... he was going back for the first time in over forty years!

At some time in the past twenty-five years (or so) the farmhouse was acquired by Ampleforth Abbey. It is now used as a retreat.

The renovation included the dedication of a chapel in the main bedroom, including the fitting of a stained-glass window.

This visit was quite emotional for Granddad - he assured me that very little had changed over the intervening years
